Functions of Third sector
The organizations of Civil society they exist because they have Funders who have the same causes as them and finance them. Therefore, Financiers should never be just a detail in the management of organizations, and even have their own rights, which exist to guarantee the maintenance of the relationship of Donation, and which I will detail in this article.
For us, from a financial point of view, Financiers represent the same thing that citizens represent to the State, and consumers to companies. But for us, they are much more than mere financiers, much more than customers: it is because of them that we exist and operate, and we serve our Funders by fulfilling our mission and carrying out our work.
If donors are so important to organizations in the Civil society – and they really are in Brazil and around the world – they must be nurtured and respected.
This is why, in Brazil, the Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Practice has a “Financier's Rights Statute”, a list of nine items that all organizations must respect in the relationship they maintain with their Funders.
Funders' Rights
1- Be informed about the organization's mission, how it intends to use donated resources and its ability to use donations effectively for its intended objectives.
Every donor has the right to know, in detail, the mission of the organization they are financing, and how it will use the resources received to fulfill that mission. The strategy for using resources must be accessible to the donor, if he so wishes.
2 – Receive complete information about the members of the Board of Directors and Board of Directors of the organization requesting the resources.
The donor has the right to know, in detail, who are the people who lead the organization he is going to finance or are already a donor. The name and profile of the members of the organization's Council and Management must be accessible. In fact, not just him, every organization should present this information transparently, on its website and activity reports.
3 – Have access to the organization’s most recent annual financial statement.
In our industry, there is no reason for organizations in the Civil society not sharing their financial statements with everyone. This is even more relevant for Financiers: as they are the ones who finance us, they have the right to know our numbers, based on complete and accessible financial statements. Being transparent with our Funders helps to ensure a stable and permanent relationship of trust with them.
4 – Ensure that donations will be used for the purposes for which they were made.
A Donation What we receive comes to fulfill our mission, and must be used for that. It is the Financiers' right that we use the resources we receive, appropriately, and within what was originally proposed. If the resource is “stamped”, that is, it is donated for a previously specified use, it must be used. Any change in the purpose of using the resource must be previously informed and agreed with the donor. Without the donor's consent, the resource cannot have any other purpose.
5 – Receive appropriate recognition.
Financiers are our financiers and it is with their resources that we fulfill our mission. Recognizing this support, this trust that Funders have in us is an obligation of organizations, and receiving this recognition – respecting anonymity, when applicable – is a right of Funders.
6 – Have the Guarantee that any information about your Donation will be treated with respect and confidentiality and cannot be disclosed without prior approval.
Data on Funders is the most valuable information an organization has, especially if analyzed from the point of view of its revenue. This data must be treated with the necessary diligence and care, respecting the wishes of its Funders when they do not wish to be identified.
7 – Be informed whether those requesting resources are members of the organization, contracted independent professionals or volunteers.
It is the donor's right to know how the person with whom he is relating, the recipient, is linked to the organization: whether he is a third party, whether he is a volunteer or whether he is an employee of the organization. How is yours Remuneration, what is your dedication to the organization, what are your goals and responsibilities, etc. All this information must be provided in a transparent way to Funders.
8 – You can remove your name, if you wish, from any list of addresses that the organization intends to share with third parties.
Data about Funders belongs to them and the organizations they donate to. An organization can never transfer data about its Funders to another organization, or even sell this information to generate resources for itself, without prior and express authorization from the donor himself. If he does not want to be part of this list, he has the right to have his will followed. In general, in fact, we always recommend that an organization never transfer its Funders' data to third parties.
9 – Receive quick, frank and truthful answers to the questions you ask.
Yes, it is the Financiers who make us exist and maintain us with their resources, and without expecting any other Counterpart other than fulfilling our mission. Therefore, due to this commitment they have with us, organizations must commit to providing quick and truthful answers to the questions they ask. At the Third sector, there are very few cases of information that must be confidential, and it definitely does not relate to the management of the organization and its resources. Funders have the right to know about this and have their questions answered.
It saw? There are nine rights of Funders, which must be known and respected by organizations, and even more so by us fundraisers, to ensure that the relationship with our Funders is always transparent and trustworthy.
