Campaign Story

Irena Sendler, born in 1910 in Poland, was an activist and hero who saved more than 2500 Jewish children from the Warsaw Ghetto during the Holocaust. Daughter of Catholic parents, her father, a doctor, taught her the importance of helping those in need. He studied Polish literature and joined the Socialist Party. He married twice and had three children. When the Germans invaded Poland, she worked in the Warsaw Social Welfare Department and secretly helped Jews. In 1942, he joined the Council for Aid to the Jews, Zegota. As a nurse, she obtained documents to help children leave the ghetto and give them to Polish families and Catholic orphanages. She recorded the children's names and new identities and buried the information in glass jars so it could be retrieved after the war. Sendler was arrested, tortured and sentenced to death, but survived thanks to bribes from German guards. After the war, she became a teacher and worked at the Ministry of Education. She received numerous awards and honors for her heroic actions, including the title of Righteous Among the Nations and the Order of the White Eagle. He passed away in 2008 at the age of 98.
