Campaign Story

A Brasília Quad Rugby Sports and Cultural Association (BSB QUAD) transformed Wheelchair Rugby into a powerful tool for social inclusion, promoting to many people with disabilities the basic right of access to sport and leisure in an inclusive, egalitarian manner, based on the principles of human rights and Sustainable development, promoting the development of citizenship through the practice of the principles of Wheelchair Rugby.
Atleta de Rugby em Cadeira de Rodas - Matheus, durante campeonato em BrasíliaAn expression constantly used is: “It's not just Rugby” because it goes even further. Each athlete has incredible stories and motivations: “Rugby was true physical and mental rehabilitation for me. Living with other wheelchair users, exchanging experiences, simple things that influence the life of a wheelchair user. And the sport itself, which is health and good”, says Matheus Soares, BSB QUAD Athlete.

The daily life of a wheelchair user is totally different. The expression "challenges need to be overcome” defines well the struggle of wheelchair users, which takes place from the time they wake up until the time they go to bed. They always have to learn new approaches, everyday life is full of obstacles, the streets, the buildings, the cities, are not prepared. Sport comes into this context. For a person with a disability, playing a sport is life-changing. Wheelchair Rugby is an excellent option for this inclusion, not only because of the physical practice, but because of the coexistence, because you are always traveling, exchanging experiences with different people. It symbolizes a better life.Atleta de Rugby em Cadeira de Rodas - Guilherme, em partida de campeonato de Rugby em bebedouro SP
Another BSB QUAD athlete, Guilherme Gomes, talks about the importance of Rugby in his rehabilitation, "WDiscovering Rugby after a high spinal cord injury was, without a doubt, a blessing. An opportunity to experience the sport again. A form of integration, insertion, true inclusion. Rugby is a complex sport that demands a lot from the body and mind. The physical conditioning resulting from its practice brings many health benefits and helps us face daily challenges, enabling a significant increase in mobility and independence. From a psychological perspective, it brings confidence and increases self-esteem. Furthermore, the social integration provided, the exchange of experiences with other practitioners is essential and irreplaceable. Rugby is a watershed. Whoever tries it, learns to love.”
BSB QUAD emerged in 2010, with a focus on the social inclusion of people with disabilities through Rugby, shortly after the sport began to be effectively practiced in Brazil. Since then, the team has grown a lot, having participated in several championships and even organizing some editions of the Brasília Open. Currently, the team has been training at the facilities of the Gama Olympic Center, which offers adequate infrastructure for practicing the sport and receives athletes from various parts of the DF.
BSB QUAD aims to form a high-performance sports team and also works on the social side through the benefits of playing Rugby, which helps to promote and fully rehabilitate people with cerebral palsy, quadriplegics, quadriamputees and congenital disabilities.
Atleta de Rugby em Cadeira de Rodas - Jose Gildevan, em partida de campeonato de Rugby em bebedouro SPRugby has brought several benefits to me. It improved my quality of life, gave me more independence and awakened my passion for sport. With this, I managed to overcome several obstacles and did things I never thought of doing. For example, I started taking a bus to go to training without needing help, I also no longer need help with household and day-to-day tasks. Furthermore, I traveled around Brazil to participate in competitions and today I work with that. Today I am more independent thanks to Rugby.” José Gildevan, BSB QUAD athlete.

The game
A Wheelchair Rugby match has four eight-minute halves. Teams have twelve minutes to attack and forty seconds to score a try. Normally, those who have a less serious injury play in attack and those who are more physically compromised play in defense.
Anyone who knows, knows that Rugby is a competitive game, and when it comes to Wheelchair Rugby, that doesn't change. It's a very competitive sport, one thing that catches your attention is when the wheelchairs collide: there's a loud noise that's like thunder! It is literally an impactful and energy-releasing game. Allied to this, what you see are smiles on the athletes' faces, in addition to expressions of physical strength and enthusiasm.
To practice the sport, wheelchairs and special equipment, consumables and support from qualified professionals are required. All of this demands high expenditure, which exceeds the production capacity Payment of many athletes. Therefore, to overcome this difficulty and encourage the participation of a greater number of interested parties, we intend to use the excellent instruments of this campaign to obtain the revenue necessary to fund the regular activities of the BSB QUAD. The intention is to raise funds from individuals and legal entities that can be reached through campaigns on social networks, direct approach and events such as games in public parks. The resources raised will be fully directed to maintaining the team's social and competitive conditions.
Despite the high importance of Wheelchair Rugby in the lives of athletes, staying active in the sport is not easy, from a financial point of view. We count on your support to continue transforming lives!!
